Thevetia peruviana, commonly known as the Yellow Oleander or Lucky Nut, is a tropical shrub admired for its beautiful, trumpet-shaped flowers and glossy leaves. Here are some key points about this plant:

Characteristics:

  • Growth Habit: It typically grows as a small to medium-sized shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 3 to 10 feet (0.9 to 3 meters).
  • Leaves: The leaves are lanceolate, dark green, and arranged in whorls. They have a glossy appearance and can be up to 8 inches long.
  • Flowers: Produces clusters of large, funnel-shaped yellow flowers, which can also be found in shades of orange. The blooms are particularly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators.

Care Tips:

  1. Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages more prolific blooming.
  2. Watering: Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. It can tolerate some drought once established.
  3. Soil: Thrives in well-draining soil. A mix that retains some moisture but allows for drainage works well.
  4. Temperature: Best suited for warm climates (USDA zones 9-11). Protect from frost, as it is not frost-tolerant.
  5. Fertilizing: A balanced fertilizer can be applied during the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering.

Common Issues:

  • Pests: Generally resistant to pests, but it may occasionally attract aphids or mealybugs. Regular inspection and treatment with insecticidal soap can help manage any issues.
  • Diseases: Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure good drainage.

Toxicity:

It’s important to note that all parts of Thevetia peruviana are toxic if ingested, particularly the seeds. Symptoms of poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, and even more severe reactions. Use caution if there are pets or children around.

Uses:

  • Ornamental: Valued for its attractive flowers and is often used in landscaping as a hedge or specimen plant.
  • Traditional Medicine: In some cultures, the plant has been used in traditional medicine, though caution is advised due to its toxicity.

Thevetia peruviana can be a stunning addition to tropical gardens, providing bright flowers and lush foliage.
