Portulaca afra, commonly known as “Elephant’s Food” or “Dwarf Jade Plant”, is a succulent species belonging to the Portulacaceae family. Despite its name, it is not closely related to the true Jade Plant (Crassula ovata), but its fleshy, oval leaves and shrubby growth habit give it a similar appearance.
Key Characteristics:
-
Leaves: Small, thick, glossy, and oval-shaped, resembling those of a miniature jade plant.
-
Stems: Succulent, reddish-brown, and become woody with age.
-
Growth Habit: Low-growing, shrubby, and spreading, typically reaching up to 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) in height.
-
Flowers: Small, pink or purple, appearing in summer but relatively insignificant compared to other Portulaca species (like Portulaca grandiflora).
-
Drought Tolerance: Highly drought-resistant, storing water in its leaves and stems.
